English Nature

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 gives English Nature the power to ensure better protection and management of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), safeguarding their existence into the future.

Owners of SSSIs must give written notice before any operation(s) deemed likely to damage the special interest features are begun. The listed operations cannot be carried out without English Nature’s consent.

English Nature handles consultations centrally. The information is then directed to the relevant Area Team(s).

English Nature currently has 23 local Area Teams and will shortly be merging (October 2006) with the Countryside Agency and part of the Rural Development Service to become ‘Natural England’.
