Blears approves London 'Walkie Talkie' skyscraper

Proposals for a new London skyscraper dubbed the "Walkie Talkie" have been approved by Hazel Blears in one of her first decisions as the new Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

The mixed use scheme at Fenchurch Street in the City of London includes proposals for a 37-storey tower designed by internationally acclaimed architect Rafael Vinoly.

The development, proposed by property company Land Securities, was approved by the City Corporation ten months ago but was called in by Blear's predecessor, Ruth Kelly.

An inquiry was held last March to consider the appropriateness of a very tall building and its impact on the Tower of London.

Following the hearing a planning inspector recommended that the proposals, opposed by English Heritage but supported by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, should be allowed.

Blears agreed with the inspector that the impact on views of and from the Tower of London, a World Heritage Site, would not be significant. She also said the site was appropriate for a tall building and was in line with development plan policies and national guidance on such schemes.
