There are rules governing products used in construction. Brought about by the European Construction Products Directive (CPD) and implemented in the UK through the Construction Products Regulations in 1991, they seek to remove technical barriers to the trade of construction products.  Further information is provided on the Communities and Local Government webiste.

Current Consultation

On the 18 August 2008,Communities and Local Government published: The European Commission's proposed Construction Products Regulation: Consultation on the proposals and development of a UK negotiating line .The consultation closes on the 10 November 2008 and you can download a response form on the Communities and Local Government website.

This consultation seeks views on the EU Commission's proposed Construction Products Regulation in order to establish a UK line for negotiations during 2008 and 2009.

The draft Regulation lays out the conditions for CE marking for construction products: a 'passport' which demonstrates that a product has been assessed against a harmonised European standard, and should therefore be accepted onto the market anywhere in the European Economic Area (EEA).
