Building Regulations Contacts and Quick Links

Questions on a Specific Building Project

If you have questions about compliance with Building Regulations on your specific project, you should first contact the Building Control Body you are using for the approval of the work. This may be either:

Please note that Communities and Local Government are unable to provide any technical advice to members of the public in relation to a dispute with a local authority (or approved inspector) over compliance of building work with building regulations in relation to a particular case. You should try to resolve the matter with the local authority/approved inspector in the first instance.

However, if you are unable to do so you may wish to consider whether you have a case for requesting a formal determination from, or making an appeal to, this Department, or to the National Assembly for Wales. Guidance on these procedures can be found in our free publication: Guide to Determinations and Appeals.

Building Regulations Policies and General Enquiries

Communities and Local Government is responsible for the development of national building regulation policy for England and Wales, and making the regulations that bring that policy into effect. Local authorities are responsible for implementing and enforcing building regulations within their own areas.

If you have a question about national building regulation policies, or need specific advice from the Department, because your local authority advises that they are unable to answer your question, you can write to the Communities and Local Government:
