20/92 - responsibilities for conservation policy and casework

This circular sets out the new developmental responsibilities following the creation of the Department of National Heritage (DNH). Responsibility for archaeology and conservation of the built heritage goes to the Secretary of State for National Heritage, who also takes responsibility for a range of heritage public bodies and for some casework, including listing of historical buildings, scheduling of ancient monuments, and issuing repairs notices.

The co-ordination of planning and conservation policy is ensured by leaving formal jurisdiction on certain types of heritage with the Secretary of State for the Environment.
