MPG5 Stability in Surface Mineral Workings and Tips

This MPG aims to apply guidance in PPG14 (which addresses the planning and technical issues involved in development on unstable land and slopes) with reference to stability in quarries, surface mines and associated tips and related structures. The problems are reviewed and the responsibilities of the different parties are briefly examined.

The guidance advises minerals planning authorities and local planning authorities on stability matters relating to mineral working and to development near to mineral workings. Good practice on design and inspection of slopes on excavations, tips and related structures is recommended.
