This MPG advises minerals planning authorities and the peat extractive industry on planning controls over peat extraction. It sets out the national picture on peat production, permitted reserves and consumption for horticultural purposes and likely amounts, sources and trends in usage of alternative products.
It outlines relevant national policy, advises on recording important peatland habitats and archaeological sites, shows how to select sites suitable for extraction and advises on rehabilitation methods. It outlines ways of treating and reviewing existing permitted extraction activities.
