Studying for a degree in town and country planning at university, followed by a period of experience in a planning office, provides the main route into the profession and membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute.

Degrees in related subjects such as geography, architecture, economics or sociology followed by post-graduate qualification in planning also form a recognised sequence.

With its wide technical remit spanning aspects of the arts and sciences, a planning degree also prepares the student very well for a variety of other occupations from business to government.
