Competition between local authorities and approved inspectors in the provision of building control services provides a stimulus to greater efficiency and higher standards of service to the customer. However, it has been recognised that these same market forces also have the potential to drive down building control standards. It is to avoid this possibility that these Performance Standards were first formulated in 1999.
These Standards and the associated guidance have now been revised by the Building Control Performance Standards Advisory Group (BCPSAG). This group comprises representatives of all the key building control industry stakeholders, including LABC (representing local authorities) and the Association of Consultant Approved Inspectors (ACAI).
A new system of building control performance indicators (BCPIs) has also been developed by BCPSAG, with financial assistance from DCLG’s Buildings Division, and is launched alongside the Standards handbook. This tool will enable building control bodies to measure the quality of the service they provide to clients. The Circular Letter announcing these new inititiatives and the Memorandum of Understanding for BCPSAG’s future activities is available here. Click the links below to access the current performance standards handbook and (BCPIs) (including guidance on how to complete them).
