FAQs

What will the review do?

  • It will carry out a detailed review, from start to finish, of the process for seeking planning permission. It will look at case studies for a range of different sectors including, housing, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and the renewables industry. The aim is to identify reasons for delay in deciding planning applications, and make recommendations for dealing with these and reducing unnecessary burdens for all parties involved in the process

Who are the reviewers? What makes them qualified to undertake the review?

Who will it report to? When will it report?

  • The review report to Caroline Flint Minister for Housing and Planning and Shriti Vadera Minister for Business & Competitiveness. It is expected to report in Autumn 2008 following commissioning of research and a call for evidence.
  • A small group of experts will provide a sounding board to the review. This group will include individuals from local authorities, businesses and other planning professionals. Other expert and broader stakeholder opinion will be engaged through stakeholder events and the call for evidence.

What are the terms of reference?

How can people get involved?

  • People can contribute to the review by responding to Call For Solutions. In addition there will be a number of stakeholder events taking place in July. Details of these events can be found here.

What evidence will you be looking at?

  • There is already a considerable amount of data on the planning system available. The review will begin by considering the evidence already available, including statistics regularly collected by Communities and Local Government. Further studies may also be commissioned if there are found to be areas that lack the detailed evidence required. We will also be calling for information, evidence and solutions from all parties with an interest in the planning application process.
