Creating an application
Hello and welcome to our series of guides to the online application process.
This video will take you through the steps required to create an online application on the Planning Portal.
To create an application you need to register on the Portal and log in.
You can start an application from any page by scrolling to the bottom and clicking the ‘Start an application’ link at the top of the ‘Planning’ column in our sitemap.
When creating a new application, you should give it a name you can remember, so when you come back at a later date you will be able to find it in your application list.
We recommend naming it with the site location to enable you and the Local Authority to know which application it is.
Once you have entered a name click the ‘next’ button to proceed.
You now need to tell us your application site’s exact location. This is so we know which local planning authority to send the application to.
If your application is for an existing building, you can enter the building’s postcode.
If the development does not have an address, click on the ‘Grid Reference’ tab and enter the six digit Easting and Northing grid references.
If you don’t know the grid reference, you can click on the ‘Map Search’ tab. This tab has instructions and a link that will enable you to locate your site on a map and find out the grid reference for it. Once you have your grid reference, you can then enter it on the ‘Grid Reference’ tab.
The next steps will ask you to confirm your site address, then your local planning authority. To accept this information, click ‘next’ to proceed. If either of these is wrong you can click ‘cancel’ to start the process again.
The last step is to choose the type of application you require.
You can either be guided through your choice, or simply choose from a list.
If you are unsure, it’s best to talk to your local planning authority (whose contact details are displayed to the right of the application chooser).
If you select ‘No – I need help choosing’ the system will take you through a series of multiple-choice questions to help you find out what you need.
If you need any extra help with any of the questions, click the help icons for information on the different types of application available.
Once you have answered the questions you will be shown the application type you have chosen.
Click on ‘Continue’ and you will be taken to the ‘Application Overview’ screen where you can start your application. The system will also save it in your list of ‘Draft’ applications.
Please be aware that once you click ‘continue’ after choosing you will be unable to change the type of your application. If it is incorrect, you will have to start the process again.
If you know the application type you need, select ‘Yes’ the system will display a drop-down list of forms to select.
Select the general type of application from the top drop-down menu. Once this is selected, the second drop-down menu will allow you to choose the specific type of application (if required).
Once these are selected, the system will show you the application type you have chosen.
Click on ‘Continue’ and you will be taken to the ‘Application Overview’ screen where you can start your application. The system will also save it in your list of ‘Draft’ applications.
Please note that once you click ‘Continue’ you will be unable to change your application type. If it is incorrect, you will have to start the process again.
Clicking ‘Cancel’ will cancel the entire process and return you to the start.
