Creating a Site location plan

  1. This document explains how to create a site location plan. A site location plan shows the entire plot of land where the proposed planning will take place.
  2. The first step is to purchase an area of map to be marked. When you start the tool you’ll be met with is a map that shows the area you are going to purchase. The area of map displayed will be specified by the postcode or grid reference given at the start of the application.
  3. You can move the map with various tools, we have the ‘zoom in’ tool selected at the moment. If you were to click on the map now, it will zoom in. If you want to zoom out, select the ‘zoom out’ icon and click on the map again.
  4. If you need to move the map up or down, or left and right, select the move map tool, and click and drag on the map image in the direction you want to move it. If you click on the ‘zoom to full map’ button, this will display a map of the entire UK mainland.
  5. Once you are happy with the position of the map you need to select a size to purchase. Your choices are 4 hectares or 16 hectares. The map will zoom in or out to match the area of map you select.
  6. When you are happy click on ‘buy this area’. The system will display a message to confirm the size of map you are purchasing. You’ll then be taken to the World Pay secure payments page where you can pay for your map.
  7. When you have paid for your map the next step is to mark out the boundary.
  8. The first thing you need to do is make a selection from the boundary type drop down menu, your options are to mark the site boundary or the ownership boundary.
  9. The Site boundary shows the area of the properties where the development is taking place. The ownership boundary covers the area of the site that belongs to you. For instance you may be planning a development that covers multiple properties, but only own half of them.
  10. Once you have selected your boundary type, you need to mark the boundary out on the map. There are a couple of tools to help you do this. The first one is mark property. This one allows you to mark out the area of any property with a single click.
  11. If you need to change any selection you have made, click ‘undo’, or to clear the map click ‘start again’.
  12. If you need to make a unique shape that doesn’t match the markings of the ordnance survey map you can use the ‘mark boundary’ tool.
  13. With the boundary selection tool selected you can click once anywhere on the map to start your shape. If you move the mouse you’ll notice that a line stretches from the point you marked to where your mouse is. So now every time you click on the map it creates a point of your shape. You can create any shape you need.
If you want to make sure you shape is following the property outlines on the map then you should see a small red square appear when your mouse is over one of these lines.
To finish a shape simply double click anywhere on the map. You should be left with a striped box.
If you are unhappy with the shape you can click start again to re-draw it from scratch.
  14. Once you have completed your shape, you have three options. ‘Print map’ creates a new window from which you can print your map.
  15. ‘Download map’ will create a jpeg image of your map that you can save to your computer, to attach to your application at a later date.
  16. Clicking capture map will attach the map to your application for you.
  17. If you need any more assistance then you can contact the Technical help desk. Details for this can be found by clicking on the contact us link on the planning portal website at the bottom of each page.
