Circular 06/86: Access to information

DoE 6/86 and WO 11/86 (27 February 1986)

This circular draws attention to the Local Government (Access to Information) Act 1985, coming into force on 1 April 1986. The principle underlying the act is that meetings of local authorities, their committees and their sub-committees should in general be open to the public including the press.

The circular discusses various aspects of the new law, including confidential and exempt information, members rights of access to documents, disabled persons, and information provided in confidence.

An annex provides a short summary of new sections inserted into the Local Government Act 1972 as a result of the new legislation.
