Mineral Planning Guidance 15: Provision of Silica Sand in England

This MPG addresses the extraction of silica sand (also known as 'industrial sand') which contains a high proportion of silica and is a scarce resource not directly used in construction, but which is vital to the glass and foundry casting industries and to a number of other specialist operations.

The guidance emphasises silica sand's essential role and its sparse distribution, but also that its extraction has an impact on the environment. The guidance provides advice to provide an adequate and steady supply of sand while ensuring extraction is consistent with social, economic and environmental sustainability.

It also advises on extraction in environmentally sensitive areas and encourages efforts to recycle.
