Planning policies

A central role is the development of planning policies in relation to a wide range of topics such as economic development, transport, Welsh Language, housing, built heritage, minerals and many others.

Policies are set out in the publications ‘Planning Policy Wales’ (PDF 711kb), and ‘Minerals Planning Policy Wales’ (PDF 241 kb), and supported by a series of Technical Advice Notes and Minerals Technical Advice Notes.

An active planning research programme supports policy development, in the context of the Welsh Assembly Government’s commitment to ensure that future development in Wales is in accord with sustainable development principles.

Other key responsibilities include contributing to primary legislation and the review, development and implementation of secondary legislation.
