Development control

Another principal role is to oversee the Welsh Assembly Government’s functions related to the development control system, including addressing issues of performance and propriety, and advising on the use of powers to intervene in particular cases.

The Division advises the Assembly Government and the Planning Decision Committee in relation to decision-making on a range of planning cases.

This includes advice on applications referred for consideration for "call in", and for decisions on the outcome of those cases and Transport and Works Act applications.

In addition, the Division undertakes decision-making in relation to Environmental Impact Assessment of planning proposals, and is responsible for the determination of applications for marine dredging.

The Division also oversees the activities of the Planning Inspectorate Executive Agency in Wales, and the Design Commission for Wales.
