Key components of achieving the desired standards of buildings are the workmanship and the materials used.
The Building Regulations have in place a degree of control over these through Regulation 7, which requires that any building work shall be carried out with proper materials and in a workmanlike manner. A separate Approved Document has been produced to give guidance on how that regulation may be satisfied.
There are also legal frameworks concerning the placement of construction products on the UK market. These are linked to the European 'Construction Products Directive (CPD)' which effectively requires many products to be CE Marked before they can be traded.
Most new homes are provided with a warranty. These Housing Warranties give guarantees against certain defects that may arise in the early years of a building's life.
