TAN 8 - Renewable Energy - 2005

This TAN covers those energy flows which occur naturally and repeatedly in the environment, from sources such as the sun, wind, water, geothermal energy, plant material and certain wastes. The environmental implications of new technologies are not always known from the start so the guidance suggests that temporary planning permissions may be appropriate, but may prove unrealistic for commercial projects.

Local planning authorities may also consider using planning conditions for projects in the early stages of technical development. For any development with significant effects on the environment by reason of its nature, size or location, an environmental impact assessment will be required. Where environmental impact assessment is not required, planning authorities will still be expected to have full regard to the environmental implications of the development.

A number of annexes provide specific guidance on wind energy, waste combustion, hydropower, biomass, anaerobic digestion, landfill gas and active solar systems.
