This TAN begins by considering the scope of Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) made by local planning authorities in the interests of public amenity. It goes on to outline how this principle may be applied in the case of individual trees and woodlands, on Crown land, in which the Forestry Commission has an interest, on local authority land and in conservation areas.
It discusses how the need for a TPO may be assessed, the effect of planning permissions on existing trees and the sort of work which may in special circumstances be undertaken on trees protected by TPOs without a consent from the local planning authority or the Forestry Commission.
