TAN 19 Telecommunications 2002

This TAN takes account of the growth of the telecommunications industry and technology, of the new social and economic demands for communications and of the Welsh Assembly Government’s environmental policies.

It defines telecommunications as including all forms of communications by electrical or optical wire and cable and radio signals (whether terrestrial or by satellite), both public and private. It covers the different forms of public communications systems and their development requirements and discusses broadcasting, reception issues, and the implications for development plans and development control.

Advice is given on the operation of ‘prior approval’ procedures (relevant to permitted development rights for certain telecommunications development) which enable authorities to influence siting and design on amenity grounds. Mast and site sharing, where appropriate, is encouraged.
