Technical Guidance

As the technical requirements of the Building Regulations are broad functional requirements, the role of guidance in knowing how those requirements can be satisfied is key.

The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) publishes guidance on meeting the requirements in what are known as "Approved Documents". The guidance contained in each document relates only to the particular requirements of the regulations that the document addresses. The building work will also have to comply with the requirements of any other relevant paragraphs in Schedule 1 to the regulations.

Other sources of guidance can also provide valuable information and are available here. They are organised in technical subject groups based on the Parts A to P or the requirements of the Building Regulations and can be accessed using the links in the panel on the left.
