TAN 7 - Outdoor Advertisement Control - 1996

This TAN recognises the importance of advertising to the economy but emphasises the importance of siting and design in controlling outdoor advertisements, especially in conservation areas or where vernacular buildings play an important part in the appearance of a neighbourhood. However, the guidance makes clear that care should be taken not to unnecessarily stifle original designs or new display techniques.

It points out that the display of outdoor advertisements can only be controlled in the interests of amenity and public safety. It stipulates that advertisement control should be an open process related to development plan policies and that clear reasons for decisions should be given.

Areas of special sensitivity are discussed, as is the Assembly’s direction-making power.
